News: Credit for Teaching – Inside Higher Ed.

This is an interesting initiative to peer review and share teaching materials in sociology. Especially in the field of ESP, there is a lack of ways to share quality teaching materials and for faculty to get some credit for them. There is too much emphasis on publishing papers that may only have a limited impact in a field when there would be a much wider audience for quality teaching. The materials must not only be peer reviewed but the authors have to provide evidence of effectiveness–making it more like an action research project.

Paper is better sometimes

After a first draft, or for difficult sections of articles such as the discussion section, I recommend printing out your draft on paper or writing an outline AFTER the first draft to help you restructure or even just see the structure of your writing. The screen forces us to look and think more at a paragraph level of writing and it is not always the best way to do document or section level editing.

KAIST study on twitter

I think this KAIST study has it right. I am really not that interested in hearing about what people are eating for lunch right now but it is a really valuable way to exchange (mostly) quality links–the news.

Like traditional media it serves the function of shifting through the garbage and unreliable sources to find the important information. I don't have time to find it all myself.
